1971 Mercedes Benz 350 SL

“Mercedes does beautiful work, absolutely” Sebastian Thrun

The Mercedes-Benz SL-Class is a grand touring sports car manufactured by Mercedes-Benz since 1954. The designation SL derives from the German Sport-Leicht , which translated to English means “Sport Light”.
Initially, the first 300 SL was a Grand Prix racing car built in 1952 with no intention of developing a street version. In 1954, an American importer Max Hoffman suggested the street version of the 300 SL for the wealthy performance car enthusiasts in the United States where the market for the personal luxury car was booming after the Second World War.
In 1971, the third generation SL R107 was introduced with new design language and safety features that spread to the subsequent Mercedes-Benz models. For the first time, the V8 engines were fitted to the SL-Class. With the production from 1971 to 1989, R107 was one of the longest-produced vehicles from Mercedes-Benz.
This beautiful example was sold new in the United Kingdom in 1971 and imported into New Zealand in October 1983.
BAINS CLASSIC MOTOR HOUSE are brokering this vehicle on behalf of a deceased estate. Any information that we have has come from family members and paperwork that accompanies the vehicle. The car was stripped to bare metal for a high quality repaint and has only been partly reassembled before our late client passed away. We believe that the parts/ trim that have been taken off the car is 99% there and will accompany the vehicle, however we cannot guarantee this and certainly strongly recommend that any bidders come and view the vehicle and parts that accompany it. The paint has been applied to a very high standard.
The vehicle has a near new fabric top in tan which is finished to a very high standard along with a factory hard top in original condition. The vehicle runs well and drives nicely and it is believed the motor has been out in the past and has been the recipient of work.
Windscreen appears to have a small crack coming from the bottom left corner. Grill and front bumper have been temporarily attached to the car for photos. The vehicle’s registration is on hold and will come with the personalised plates included in the sale price. This vehicle is being Auctioned on Trademe www.trademe.co.nz
